Scaramel Apples with Edible Bugs are a daring and crunchy twist on the classic caramel apple. Crisp apples are coated in rich, buttery caramel (“scaramel”) and topped with roasted edible insects like crickets or mealworms for protein-packed crunch. Perfect for adventurous eaters, Halloween treats, or unique party desserts. 

Cooking Method

 

  1. Prepare apples:
    Wash and dry apples thoroughly. Remove stems and insert wooden sticks.
  2. Make scaramel (caramel):
    In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and butter over medium heat, stirring until melted and smooth.
  3. Add cream & vanilla:
    Slowly stir in heavy cream and vanilla extract. Cook until the mixture reaches soft-ball stage (245°F / 118°C).
  4. Dip apples:
    Holding by the stick, dip each apple into the hot scaramel, letting excess drip off.
  5. Add edible bugs:
    While the scaramel is still warm, sprinkle or press roasted edible insects onto the surface, ensuring they stick.
  6. Cool:
    Place the apples on parchment paper and allow scaramel to set completely.
  7. Serve:
    Enjoy immediately or store in a cool place. These are perfect for adventurous snackers or Halloween parties!
