Originating from the historic Buganda Kingdom, this flavorful dish is prepared by steaming meat, chicken, fish, or mushrooms in banana leaves with a rich sauce made from peanuts, vegetables, and aromatic seasonings. The banana leaves lock in moisture and flavor, creating a tender, aromatic, and deeply satisfying meal.
Traditionally served during special occasions, celebrations, and family gatherings, Luwombo is often accompanied by matoke, rice, sweet potatoes, cassava, or posho. The slow steaming process allows the ingredients to blend beautifully, resulting in a rich and authentic Ugandan flavor.
Luwombo remains a treasured part of Uganda’s culinary heritage and is widely regarded as one of the country's national dishes.
Cooking Method
Wash and prepare the banana leaves by briefly heating them over a flame or hot water to make them flexible.
Place the meat, fish, or mushrooms in a large bowl.
Add onion, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, salt, black pepper, and herbs.
Mix in the peanut butter and coconut milk until well combined.
Place portions of the mixture onto banana leaves.
Fold the banana leaves securely into parcels and tie if necessary.
Arrange the parcels in a steamer or large pot with a steaming rack.
Steam for 1½ to 2 hours until the contents are fully cooked and tender.
Carefully remove the parcels from the steamer.
Open and serve hot with matoke, rice, cassava, or sweet potatoes.
