Zimbabwean Mopane Worm Stew.PNG 554.11 KB
Mopane Worm Stew is a well-known traditional dish from Zimbabwe, prepared using dried or rehydrated mopane worms simmered in a rich tomato and onion sauce. Harvested from the mopane tree, these edible caterpillars are a highly valued source of protein and have been enjoyed across Southern Africa for generations.

Zimbabwean Mopane Worm Stew is appreciated for its earthy flavor, satisfying texture, and nutritional value. The worms are carefully cleaned, softened, and cooked with garlic, tomatoes, onions, and aromatic spices to create a hearty meal. It is traditionally served with Sadza, rice, or boiled vegetables, making it a staple in many Zimbabwean homes.

Cooking Method

  1.  Rinse the dried mopane worms thoroughly under cold water.
  2.  Soak them in warm water for 20–30 minutes until softened, then drain.
  3.  Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  4.  Sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent.
  5.  Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6.  Stir in the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste, cooking for 5 minutes until the tomatoes break down.
  7.  Season with paprika, black pepper, salt, and thyme if using.
  8.  Pour in the water or vegetable stock and bring to a gentle simmer.
  9.  Add the softened mopane worms and stir well.
  10.  Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop and the sauce to thicken.
  11.  Garnish with chopped parsley or coriander and serve hot with Sadza or rice.
