Authentic Vietnamese Coffee Recipe
Vietnamese Coffee, known as Cà Phê Sữa Đá, is one of Vietnam's most iconic beverages. Made with strongly brewed Vietnamese dark roast coffee and sweetened condensed milk, this rich and creamy drink is famous for its bold flavor and smooth sweetness. Traditionally brewed using a Vietnamese phin filter, the coffee slowly drips into a glass containing condensed milk before being stirred and served over ice. It can also be enjoyed hot as Cà Phê Sữa Nóng.
The slow brewing process extracts deep, chocolatey, and slightly nutty flavors from the coffee, while the condensed milk creates a creamy texture and perfectly balances the coffee's natural bitterness. This simple yet distinctive drink is enjoyed throughout Vietnam in cafés, homes, and street-side coffee shops.
Whether served hot or iced, Vietnamese Coffee is a refreshing and energizing beverage that's easy to prepare at home and delivers an authentic taste of Vietnamese coffee culture.
Cooking Method
- Add the sweetened condensed milk to the bottom of a serving glass.
- Place the Vietnamese phin filter on top of the glass.
- Add the ground coffee to the filter and gently shake to level the grounds.
- Place the filter press over the coffee without pressing too tightly.
- Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee to let it bloom for about 30 seconds.
- Slowly pour the remaining hot water into the filter and cover it with the lid.
- Allow the coffee to drip slowly into the glass for 4–6 minutes.
- Remove the phin filter and stir the coffee with the condensed milk until smooth.
- For Vietnamese Iced Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá), fill a separate glass with ice and pour the coffee over the ice. For Hot Vietnamese Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Nóng), serve immediately without ice.
- Enjoy immediately while fresh.
