Indonesian Soto Ayam Recipe | Authentic Indonesian Chicken Turmeric Soup
Soto ayam is one of Indonesia’s most beloved traditional soups, known for its aromatic golden broth, tender shredded chicken, fragrant spices, and comforting flavors. This classic Indonesian dish is prepared with a rich chicken broth infused with turmeric, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots, and kaffir lime leaves, creating its signature vibrant color and refreshing aroma. Popular throughout Indonesia, Soto Ayam is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and is considered one of the country's ultimate comfort foods.
The broth is slowly simmered with chicken and an aromatic spice paste until deeply flavorful. The cooked chicken is shredded and returned to the soup alongside glass noodles or vermicelli, boiled eggs, cabbage, bean sprouts, and fresh herbs. Turmeric provides the soup's distinctive golden hue, while lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves create a bright citrus fragrance that perfectly balances the rich chicken stock.
Soto Ayam is traditionally served with steamed rice or rice cakes (lontong), crispy fried shallots, fresh cilantro, lime wedges, sambal (Indonesian chili paste), and prawn crackers (kerupuk). Every bowl is warm, nourishing, and packed with authentic Indonesian flavors.
Whether you're exploring Indonesian cuisine for the first time or preparing a comforting homemade soup, Soto Ayam offers a delicious combination of fragrant spices, tender chicken, and refreshing herbs that make it a timeless favorite.
