Authentic Japanese Sushi Rolls Recipe | Easy Homemade Maki Rolls
Japanese Sushi Rolls, also known as Maki Rolls, are a classic Japanese dish made with seasoned sushi rice, nori seaweed, and a variety of fresh fillings such as sushi-grade fish, cucumber, avocado, and crab. Rolled tightly using a bamboo sushi mat and sliced into bite-sized pieces, sushi rolls are a favorite for lunch, dinner, parties, and special occasions. Served with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi, homemade sushi is fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly easy to prepare.
Cooking Method
- Mix the cooked sushi rice with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Allow it to cool.
- Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat.
- Spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.
- Arrange the fish, cucumber, avocado, or crab across the center.
- Roll tightly using the bamboo mat, sealing the edge with a little water.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
- Slice each roll into 6–8 pieces using a sharp, wet knife.
- Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions if desired.
- Serve immediately with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.
