Authentic Shumai Recipe | Chinese Steamed Pork & Shrimp Dumplings
Shumai, also known as Siu Mai or Shaomai, is a classic Chinese dim sum dumpling made with a savory filling of ground pork, shrimp, mushrooms, and seasonings wrapped in thin wonton wrappers. Steamed until tender and juicy, these open-faced dumplings are a favorite at dim sum restaurants and are perfect as an appetizer, snack, or light meal. Homemade Shumai is easy to prepare and delivers authentic flavor with every bite.
Cooking Method
- In a large bowl, combine the pork, shrimp, mushrooms, green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper.
- Mix until well combined.
- Place a wonton wrapper in your hand and add about 1 tablespoon of filling.
- Gently gather the wrapper around the filling, leaving the top open.
- Press lightly to shape the dumpling.
- Top each Shumai with a green pea or a small piece of carrot.
- Arrange the dumplings in a parchment-lined steamer, leaving space between them.
- Steam over boiling water for 10–12 minutes, or until the filling is fully cooked.
- Remove carefully from the steamer.
- Serve hot with soy sauce, chili oil, or your favorite dipping sauce.
