Eto is a traditional Ghanaian dish made from boiled plantains or yam mashed together with palm oil, onions, and eggs. Originating in Ghana, Eto is especially popular among the Akan people and is often prepared for special occasions, festivals, naming ceremonies, and family celebrations. 

This simple yet flavorful dish combines soft plantains with rich palm oil and aromatic onions to create a hearty and satisfying meal. It is traditionally garnished with boiled eggs, roasted peanuts, or avocado, adding texture and nutritional value. Depending on regional preferences, Eto can be made with either ripe or unripe plantains, resulting in slightly different flavors and textures. 

Nutritious and deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture, Eto is a beloved comfort food that showcases the country's rich culinary heritage. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Place the plantains in a pot and cover with water. 
  2.  Add a pinch of salt and boil until tender, about 15–20 minutes. 
  3.  Drain the plantains and transfer them to a large bowl. 
  4.  Heat the palm oil and lightly sauté the onions. 
  5.  Pour the onion and palm oil mixture over the plantains. 
  6.  Mash until smooth or slightly chunky, according to preference. 
  7.  Season with salt and mix well. 
  8.  Transfer to a serving dish. 
  9.  Garnish with sliced boiled eggs and crushed roasted peanuts. 
  10.  Serve warm.
