Date Cake is a rich, moist, and naturally sweet dessert made with soft dates, flour, butter, and warm spices. Popular in many regions of the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, this comforting cake is known for its tender crumb and deep caramel-like flavor derived from dates.

Perfect for tea time, breakfast, dessert, or special occasions, Date Cake is both satisfying and easy to prepare. The natural sweetness of dates reduces the need for excessive sugar while adding fiber and nutrients. Many variations include nuts such as walnuts or almonds for extra texture and flavor.

Whether served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or topped with a creamy frosting, this classic cake is a delicious treat for family and friends.

Cooking Method

  1.  Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2.  Grease and line an 8-inch cake pan.
  3.  Place the chopped dates in a bowl and pour over the hot water.
  4.  Stir in the baking soda and let stand for 10 minutes.
  5.  In a separate bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  6.  Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  7.  Mix in the vanilla extract.
  8.  In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  9.  Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture.
  10.  Fold in the softened date mixture and nuts if using.
  11.  Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  12.  Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  13.  Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  14.  Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely before serving.
