Ginataang Munggo Recipe | Traditional Filipino Coconut Mung Bean Dessert

0 likes 0 reviews 25 views

Ginataang munggo is a traditional dessert from the Philippines that combines tender mung beans with rich coconut milk for a creamy and comforting treat. Unlike savory mung bean dishes, this sweet version is simmered with coconut milk, coconut cream, sugar, and a pinch of salt to create a smooth, naturally sweet dessert. Some variations also include glutinous rice, sago (tapioca pearls), or ripe jackfruit for extra texture and tropical flavor.

Popular as a merienda (afternoon snack) or dessert, Ginataang Munggo is loved for its hearty texture, subtle sweetness, and rich coconut aroma. The mung beans become soft and creamy while absorbing the flavors of the coconut milk, making every spoonful warm, satisfying, and nourishing. This comforting dessert is commonly enjoyed during rainy days, family gatherings, and festive occasions throughout the Philippines.

Easy to prepare with simple pantry ingredients, this authentic homemade Ginataang Munggo recipe is naturally gluten-free, packed with plant-based protein and fiber, and can be served warm or chilled. Whether you're exploring Filipino cuisine or looking for a unique coconut dessert, this recipe offers a delicious taste of traditional home cooking.

Cooking Method

  1.  Rinse the mung beans thoroughly under cold water.
  2.  In a pot, combine the mung beans and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30–40 minutes until the beans are soft.
  3.  Stir in the coconut milk and coconut cream.
  4.  Add the brown sugar and salt, stirring until dissolved.
  5.  Simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6.  Add the cooked tapioca pearls and jackfruit, if using, and cook for another 3–5 minutes
  7.  Remove from the heat and allow the dessert to cool slightly.
  8.  Garnish with toasted coconut flakes or extra jackfruit.
  9.  Serve warm or chilled.
