 Kamounia is a classic dish from Tunisia, renowned for its bold cumin flavor and rich, comforting taste. This traditional Tunisian stew is typically prepared with tender beef or lamb simmered in a fragrant sauce made with garlic, tomato paste, harissa, olive oil, and an abundance of ground cumin. The slow cooking process allows the meat to become incredibly tender while absorbing the deep, earthy spices that define this authentic North African favorite. 

Perfect for family dinners or special occasions, Tunisian Kamounia is hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. It is traditionally served with crusty bread, couscous, or steamed rice, making it an ideal meal for soaking up the rich, aromatic sauce. Cooking Method


  1.  Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. 
  2.  Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides for about 6–8 minutes. 
  3.  Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. 
  4.  Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute. 
  5.  Mix in the tomato paste and harissa until well combined. 
  6.  Add the ground cumin, paprika, coriander, caraway, salt, and black pepper, stirring to coat the beef evenly. 
  7.  Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil. 
  8.  Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1½ to 2 hours, or until the beef is fork-tender. 
  9.  Stir occasionally and add a little more broth if needed. 
  10.  Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving. 
  11.  Garnish with freshly chopped parsley. 
  12.  Serve hot with crusty bread, couscous, or steamed rice.
