Mchuzi wa Samaki is a flavorful coastal dish from Tanzania, widely enjoyed in Zanzibar and along the Swahili Coast. This authentic recipe features fresh fish simmered in a rich coconut milk sauce with tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, and aromatic spices. The creamy curry is perfectly balanced with warm spices and a hint of citrus, creating a comforting and delicious seafood meal. 

Perfect for family dinners or special occasions, Tanzanian Mchuzi wa Samaki is traditionally served with steamed rice, chapati, ugali, or coconut rice. Rich in protein and healthy nutrients, this easy one-pot recipe brings the vibrant flavors of East African cuisine to your kitchen. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. 
  2.  Add the onion and sauté until soft. 
  3.  Stir in the garlic and ginger, cooking for 1 minute. 
  4.  Add the tomatoes and tomato paste, then cook until the tomatoes soften. 
  5.  Mix in the curry powder, paprika, turmeric, salt, and black pepper. 
  6.  Pour in the coconut milk and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. 
  7.  Add the fish pieces carefully to the sauce. 
  8.  Cover and cook for 10–12 minutes, or until the fish is tender and flakes easily with a fork. 
  9.  Stir in the lime juice and adjust the seasoning to taste. 
  10.  Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot.
