Cabo Verdean Arroz de Marisco is a traditional seafood rice dish made with shrimp, mussels, squid, and aromatic spices simmered in a rich tomato-based broth. Inspired by the abundant seafood of Cape Verde, this hearty recipe is perfect for family dinners, celebrations, or special occasions. 

The seafood is gently cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and bell peppers to create a flavorful base. Rice is then simmered in the savory broth, allowing it to absorb the rich flavors of the seafood and seasonings. 

Paprika, bay leaf, and fresh herbs add depth and aroma, while the combination of seafood creates a delicious balance of textures. The finished dish is moist, comforting, and packed with coastal flavor. 

Served hot with lemon wedges and fresh parsley, Cabo Verdean Arroz de Marisco is a satisfying one-pot meal that celebrates the vibrant culinary traditions of Cape Verde. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. 
  2.  Sauté the onion and garlic until softened and fragrant. 
  3.  Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, and bell pepper, then cook for 5 minutes. 
  4.  Stir in the paprika, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. 
  5.  Add the rice and stir for 2 minutes to coat it with the seasonings. 
  6.  Pour in the seafood stock and bring to a boil. 
  7.  Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. 
  8.  Add the shrimp, mussels, and squid. 
  9.  Continue cooking for 10–12 minutes, or until the seafood is cooked through and the rice is tender. 
  10.  Remove the bay leaf and adjust the seasoning if needed. 
  11.  Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with lemon wedges.
