Fish Biryani is a rich, aromatic, and flavorful rice dish made with tender fish pieces, fragrant basmati rice, and a blend of traditional spices. This delicious recipe is a seafood twist on the classic biryani, offering a lighter yet equally satisfying experience. The fish absorbs the spices beautifully, creating a dish that is both flavorful and comforting. 

The preparation involves marinating the fish with spices and yogurt to enhance its taste and tenderness. The rice is partially cooked and then layered with the spiced fish mixture, along with fried onions, herbs, and aromatic whole spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. The dish is then cooked on low heat (dum), allowing all the flavors to blend perfectly and infuse into the rice. 

Fish Biryani is perfect for special occasions, family gatherings, or weekend meals. It pairs well with raita, salad, or pickles, making it a complete and satisfying dish. The combination of soft, flavorful fish and fragrant rice makes every bite enjoyable.

Cooking Method


  1.  Wash and soak basmati rice for 20–30 minutes. 
  2.  Marinate fish with yogurt, turmeric, chili powder, and salt for 30 minutes. 
  3.  Heat oil or ghee in a pot and fry onions until golden brown. 
  4.  Add garlic and ginger, sauté until fragrant. 
  5.  Add marinated fish and cook gently for a few minutes. 
  6.  In another pot, boil rice until 70% cooked and drain. 
  7.  Layer the rice over the fish mixture. 
  8.  Add herbs and a little ghee on top. 
  9.  Cover and cook on low heat (dum) for 15–20 minutes. 
  10.  Gently mix before serving and serve hot.
