Japanese Miso Soup Recipe | Authentic Homemade Miso Soup

Miso Soup is one of Japan's most essential and comforting dishes, served daily in homes, restaurants, and traditional meals across the country. Made with a delicate dashi broth, fermented miso paste, silky tofu, seaweed, and fresh green onions, this classic soup is light, nourishing, and full of rich umami flavor. Despite its simple ingredients, Miso Soup is deeply satisfying and is considered a cornerstone of Japanese cuisine.

The heart of authentic Miso Soup is dashi, a flavorful broth traditionally prepared with kombu (kelp) and bonito flakes. White miso produces a mild, slightly sweet flavor, while red miso creates a richer, deeper taste. The miso paste is stirred into the hot broth at the end of cooking rather than boiled, preserving its delicate flavor, beneficial probiotics, and nutritional value.

Miso Soup is commonly served alongside steamed rice, grilled fish, sushi, ramen, or Japanese breakfast dishes. It can also be customized with mushrooms, spinach, daikon radish, clams, cabbage, carrots, or seasonal vegetables, making it both versatile and nutritious. Rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and gut-friendly probiotics, this traditional soup is as healthy as it is delicious.

Quick to prepare in under 20 minutes, homemade Miso Soup brings authentic Japanese flavors to your kitchen with minimal effort. Whether you're enjoying it as a starter, side dish, or light meal, this timeless recipe offers warmth, comfort, and the unmistakable taste of Japan.

Cooking Method

  1.  Prepare the dashi broth and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  2.  Add the dried wakame seaweed and let it rehydrate for 2–3 minutes
  3.  Add the tofu cubes and gently warm them for 2 minutes. Do not boil vigorously.
  4.  Place the miso paste in a small bowl.
  5.  Add a few tablespoons of the hot broth to the miso and stir until completely smooth.
  6.  Pour the dissolved miso back into the soup and stir gently.
  7.  Keep the soup warm over low heat, but do not let it boil after adding the miso.
  8.  Stir in the sliced green onions just before serving.
  9.  Add optional vegetables or mushrooms if desired.
  10.  Serve immediately while hot.
