Japanese Chicken Katsu Recipe | Authentic Crispy Chicken Cutlet
Chicken Katsu is one of Japan's most popular comfort foods, loved for its irresistibly crispy golden coating and tender, juicy chicken. Made by coating chicken cutlets in flour, egg, and Japanese panko breadcrumbs before frying until perfectly crisp, Chicken Katsu delivers a satisfying crunch with every bite. Traditionally served with steamed rice, finely shredded cabbage, and rich Tonkatsu sauce, this classic dish is a staple in Japanese homes, restaurants, and bento lunch boxes.
The secret to authentic Chicken Katsu lies in using panko breadcrumbs, which create a lighter, crispier texture than regular breadcrumbs. The chicken remains moist and flavorful inside while the outside develops a beautifully crunchy crust. A drizzle of sweet and savory Tonkatsu sauce adds the signature Japanese flavor, balancing the crispy coating with a rich umami finish.
Chicken Katsu is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways. It is commonly served as a complete meal with miso soup and rice, sliced over Japanese curry (Katsu Curry), layered into sandwiches (Katsu Sando), or added to salads and rice bowls. Its simple preparation and universal appeal have made it one of the most recognized Japanese dishes around the world.
Perfect for weeknight dinners, family meals, or entertaining guests, this homemade Chicken Katsu recipe is easy to prepare while delivering restaurant-quality results. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with authentic Japanese flavor, it's a timeless favorite that everyone will love.
