Kapenta Stew is a classic dish from Zimbabwe featuring kapenta, small freshwater sardine-like fish harvested from Lake Kariba. Rich in flavor and packed with protein, kapenta is simmered in a savory tomato and onion sauce infused with garlic and aromatic seasonings. 

Zimbabwean Kapenta Stew is an affordable, nutritious, and comforting meal enjoyed in homes across the country. It is traditionally served with Sadza, steamed rice, or boiled vegetables, making it a wholesome everyday favorite. The combination of tender fish and rich tomato gravy creates a delicious dish that's both simple and satisfying. 

Cooking Method


  1.  If using dried kapenta, rinse thoroughly under cold water and drain well. 
  2.  Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. 
  3.  Sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent. 
  4.  Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. 
  5.  Stir in the diced tomatoes and tomato paste, cooking for 5 minutes until the tomatoes soften. 
  6.  Add the paprika, thyme, black pepper, and salt. 
  7.  Pour in the water or fish stock and bring to a gentle simmer. 
  8.  Add the kapenta and stir gently to combine. 
  9.  Cover and simmer for 12–15 minutes, allowing the fish to absorb the flavors of the sauce. 
  10.  Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. 
  11.  Garnish with fresh parsley or coriander and serve hot.
