 Muriwo Unedovi is a classic dish from Zimbabwe that combines tender leafy greens with a rich, creamy peanut butter sauce. The Shona name Muriwo Unedovi translates to "vegetables with peanut butter," reflecting the dish's simple yet flavorful ingredients. 

Commonly prepared with pumpkin leaves, collard greens, kale, spinach, or mustard greens, this traditional recipe is a staple in many Zimbabwean households. The creamy peanut butter adds a delicious nutty richness that perfectly complements the fresh greens. Muriwo Unedovi is most often served alongside Sadza, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal enjoyed throughout the country. 

Cooking Method

  1.  Wash the leafy greens thoroughly and chop them into bite-sized pieces. 
  2.  Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. 
  3.  Sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent. 
  4.  Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. 
  5.  Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens. 
  6.  Add the leafy greens and stir until they begin to wilt. 
  7.  Mix the peanut butter with a small amount of warm water until smooth. 
  8.  Pour the peanut butter mixture into the saucepan along with the remaining water or vegetable stock. 
  9.  Season with salt and black pepper. 
  10.  Simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender and the sauce is creamy. 
  11.  Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve hot.
