Authentic Modak Recipe | Traditional Indian Steamed Sweet Dumplings
Modak is a traditional Indian sweet dumpling made with a soft rice flour shell and a delicious filling of fresh coconut, jaggery, cardamom, and ghee. Widely associated with the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, Modak is believed to be the favorite sweet of Lord Ganesha. The steamed version, known as Ukadiche Modak, is especially popular in Maharashtra and is cherished for its delicate texture and rich, naturally sweet filling. Soft, fragrant, and flavorful, Modak is a festive dessert enjoyed across India during religious celebrations and special occasions.
Cooking Method
- Heat the jaggery and ghee in a pan until melted.
- Add the grated coconut and cardamom powder. Cook for 4–5 minutes, then cool completely.
- Bring the water, salt, and ghee to a boil.
- Add the rice flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Cover and let the dough rest for 10 minutes, then knead until smooth.
- Divide the dough into small balls and flatten each into a thin disc.
- Place the coconut filling in the center and pleat the edges to form a Modak shape.
- Steam the Modaks for 10–12 minutes until the outer shell becomes glossy.
- Brush lightly with ghee if desired.
- Serve warm.
