Cabo Verdean Frango Grelhado is a traditional grilled chicken dish known for its bold flavors, smoky aroma, and tender texture. Marinated with garlic, citrus, herbs, and spices, this Cape Verdean favorite is perfect for family barbecues, weekend dinners, or festive gatherings. 

The chicken is infused with a flavorful marinade made from garlic, lemon juice, paprika, olive oil, and herbs. Marinating allows the seasonings to penetrate the meat, resulting in juicy, flavorful chicken with every bite. 

Grilling gives the chicken a beautifully charred exterior while keeping the inside moist and tender. The combination of smoky flavors, aromatic spices, and citrus creates a balanced and satisfying dish. 

Traditionally served with rice, grilled vegetables, fries, or a fresh salad, Cabo Verdean Frango Grelhado is a delicious main course that captures the vibrant flavors of Cape Verdean cuisine. 

Cooking Method


  1.  In a large bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, paprika, cumin, oregano, salt, and black pepper. 
  2.  Add the chicken pieces and coat them thoroughly with the marinade. 
  3.  Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. 
  4.  Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. 
  5.  Lightly oil the grill grates to prevent sticking. 
  6.  Grill the chicken for 8–10 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until nicely charred and the internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F)
  7.  Remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes. 
  8.  Garnish with fresh parsley. 
  9.  Serve hot with lemon wedges, rice, grilled vegetables, or fries.
