Tanzanian Mishkaki ya Samaki Recipe | Traditional Grilled Fish Skewers

Mishkaki ya Samaki.PNG 1.19 MB
Mishkaki ya Samaki is a popular seafood dish from Tanzania, especially along the Swahili Coast and the island of Zanzibar. Fresh fish is marinated in a flavorful blend of garlic, ginger, lime juice, and aromatic spices before being threaded onto skewers and grilled until perfectly tender with a lightly charred exterior. The result is juicy, smoky fish infused with vibrant East African flavors.

This authentic Tanzanian Mishkaki ya Samaki recipe is perfect for barbecues, family dinners, or healthy weeknight meals. Traditionally served with coconut rice, ugali, chapati, kachumbari salad, or grilled vegetables, these grilled fish skewers are light, nutritious, and packed with protein. Whether cooked on an outdoor grill or an indoor grill pan, this simple recipe brings the taste of Tanzania to your table.

Cooking Method

  1.  If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes.
  2.  In a bowl, combine the vegetable oil, lime juice, garlic, ginger, paprika, cumin, coriander, turmeric, salt, and black pepper.
  3.  Add the fish cubes and gently toss to coat evenly.
  4.  Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  5.  Thread the marinated fish onto the skewers.
  6.  Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  7.  Lightly oil the grill grates.
  8.  Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, turning carefully until the fish is cooked through and lightly charred.
  9.  Remove from the grill and let the skewers rest for 2 minutes.
  10.  Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with lime wedges.
