Tatale is a delicious Ghanaian street food made from ripe plantains mixed with spices and fried into flavorful fritters. Popular throughout Ghana, Tatale is known for its sweet and savory taste, crispy edges, and soft interior. It is commonly enjoyed as a snack, breakfast item, or side dish and is often served with beans stew, pepper sauce, or porridge. 

The dish is prepared by mashing ripe plantains and combining them with onions, ginger, chili peppers, and cornmeal or flour. The mixture is then shaped and fried until golden brown. The natural sweetness of the plantains balances perfectly with the aromatic spices, creating a unique and satisfying flavor. 

A favorite in Ghanaian homes and street markets, Tatale is a simple yet iconic dish that showcases the versatility of plantains in West African cuisine. 

Cooking Method


  1.  Place the ripe plantains in a bowl and mash until smooth. 
  2.  Add the onion, ginger, chili pepper, and salt. 
  3.  Stir in the cornmeal or flour and mix well. 
  4.  Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. 
  5.  Scoop portions of the mixture into the hot oil. 
  6.  Flatten slightly with a spoon. 
  7.  Fry for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown. 
  8.  Remove and drain on paper towels. 
  9.  Allow to cool slightly. 
  10.  Serve warm with beans stew, pepper sauce, or as a snack.
