Tunisian Tajine | Authentic Tunisian Egg and Chicken Bake Recipe

Instead of a slow-cooked stew, the Tunisian version is a hearty oven-baked casserole made with eggs, tender chicken, potatoes, cheese, fresh herbs, and aromatic North African spices. Similar in appearance to a thick frittata or crustless quiche, it is a popular family meal served during celebrations, holidays, and everyday dinners.
Cooked chicken is combined with soft potatoes, sautéed onions, parsley, and grated cheese before being mixed with beaten eggs and seasoned with turmeric, black pepper, paprika, and optional harissa for gentle heat. The mixture is baked until golden brown with a fluffy interior and lightly crisp edges.
Tunisian Tajine is delicious served warm or at room temperature and pairs perfectly with fresh bread, salads, olives, or harissa. Its rich flavor, satisfying texture, and simple preparation make it a beloved comfort food throughout Tunisia.
Cooking Method
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish with butter.
Boil the diced potatoes for 10–12 minutes until tender. Drain and set aside.
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion for 4–5 minutes until softened, then add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
In a large bowl, combine the shredded chicken, cooked potatoes, sautéed onion, garlic, parsley, cheese, turmeric, paprika, salt, black pepper, and harissa if using.
Beat the eggs in a separate bowl, then pour them into the chicken mixture. Stir until everything is evenly combined.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top if desired for a crisp, golden finish.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is fully set.
Let the tajine rest for 10 minutes before slicing into squares.
Serve warm or at room temperature with fresh bread, salad, olives, or harissa.
