Pelmeni.PNG712.45 KBPelmeni are one of the most cherished comfort foods in Russian and Siberian cuisine. These small, tender dumplings are filled with a juicy mixture of seasoned ground meat, onions, garlic, and black pepper, then boiled until perfectly cooked. Traditionally served with butter, sour cream, vinegar, or fresh herbs, Pelmeni are simple, hearty, and incredibly satisfying.
Originating in the Siberian region, Pelmeni were historically prepared in large batches during the winter months and frozen outdoors, making them an ideal meal that could be cooked quickly whenever needed. Today, they remain a staple in Russian households and are enjoyed throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Their compact size and flavorful filling make them perfect as a main course, appetizer, or even added to a rich broth for a warming soup.
The dough is soft yet durable enough to hold the juicy filling while cooking. A classic filling combines ground beef and pork, though lamb, chicken, turkey, or venison are also popular variations. Finely grated onion adds moisture and sweetness, while garlic, salt, and black pepper create a well-balanced savory flavor. Unlike many dumplings, Pelmeni are typically smaller, allowing each bite to be packed with tender meat and delicate dough.
Pelmeni are ideal for meal prep because they freeze exceptionally well before cooking. Whether you're making them for a cozy family dinner, holiday gathering, or simply stocking your freezer with homemade comfort food, this authentic Pelmeni recipe delivers traditional flavor and satisfying results every time.
