Classic Pizza Dough Recipe | Soft, Chewy & Authentic Homemade Pizza Crust

Pizza dough is the foundation of every great homemade pizza, delivering a perfectly crisp exterior with a soft, chewy interior that's ideal for any topping. Made with just a handful of pantry staples—flour, yeast, water, olive oil, salt, and a touch of sugar—this authentic pizza dough develops incredible flavor and texture as it rises. Whether you're making a traditional Margherita, pepperoni pizza, veggie supreme, or gourmet artisan pie, this versatile dough creates a restaurant-quality crust every time.

The secret to excellent pizza dough is allowing enough time for the yeast to ferment and the gluten to develop. This creates a light, airy structure with a satisfying chew and beautifully blistered crust when baked at high temperatures. A small amount of olive oil keeps the dough tender, while proper kneading ensures elasticity and strength, making it easy to stretch into thin-crust, hand-tossed, or thick-crust pizzas.

This homemade dough is perfect for pizza nights, family dinners, parties, and meal prep. It can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to three days or frozen for several months without losing quality. Once baked, the crust becomes golden brown with crisp edges and a soft center that holds up beautifully under sauces, cheeses, meats, and vegetables.

Whether you're baking on a pizza stone, steel, or standard baking tray, this classic pizza dough recipe is simple enough for beginners while producing bakery-quality results that rival your favorite pizzeria.

Cooking Method

  1.  In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2.  In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3.  Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  4.  Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  5.  Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky.
  6.  Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  7.  Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal portions for medium pizzas or leave it whole for one large pizza.
  8.  Let the dough rest for 15–20 minutes before shaping.
  9.  Stretch or roll the dough into your desired pizza shape.
  10.  Add your favorite sauce, cheese, and toppings, then bake in a preheated oven at 475–500°F (245–260°C) for 10–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
