Classic Italian Cannoli Recipe | Crispy Pastry Shells with Sweet Ricotta Filling
Cannoli are one of Italy's most iconic desserts, originating from the beautiful island of Sicily. These elegant pastries feature crispy, golden-fried shells filled with a rich, creamy ricotta cheese filling that's lightly sweetened and flavored with vanilla, citrus zest, and chocolate chips. The contrast between the crunchy shell and the silky filling creates a dessert that's both luxurious and delightfully satisfying.
Traditional Sicilian Cannoli have been enjoyed for centuries and were originally prepared during festive celebrations before becoming a beloved dessert throughout Italy and around the world. The shells are made from a delicate pastry dough enriched with butter and a touch of cinnamon, then rolled thin, wrapped around metal cannoli tubes, and fried until perfectly crisp. The filling, made with well-drained whole milk ricotta, is smooth, creamy, and lightly sweet, allowing the fresh dairy flavor to shine.
Cannoli can be customized with chopped pistachios, candied orange peel, mini chocolate chips, or a dusting of powdered sugar. Some variations also include mascarpone cheese for an even richer filling. To maintain their signature crispness, the shells should be filled just before serving.
Perfect for holidays, weddings, birthdays, dinner parties, or special family gatherings, homemade Cannoli offer authentic Italian bakery-quality flavor with every bite. Whether you're celebrating an occasion or simply craving a classic European dessert, this recipe brings the true taste of Sicily to your kitchen.
