Cooking Method


  1.  Pour the milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan. 
  2.  Add the sugar, cinnamon stick, and salt. 
  3.  Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. 
  4.  Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently. 
  5.  Stir frequently to prevent the mixture from sticking or burning. 
  6.  Continue cooking for 60–75 minutes until the mixture thickens and turns a rich golden caramel color. 
  7.  Remove the cinnamon stick, if used. 
  8.  Stir in the vanilla extract and butter until smooth. 
  9.  Let the Doce de Leite cool slightly; it will thicken further as it cools. 
  10.  Transfer to a clean glass jar or serving dish. 
  11.  Serve warm or chilled.
