Bota is a comforting breakfast porridge enjoyed throughout Zimbabwe. Made from maize meal, sorghum, millet, or rapoko flour, Bota has a smooth, creamy consistency and is often lightly sweetened or enriched with peanut butter, milk, or butter for extra flavor and nutrition.

Zimbabwean Bota is a staple morning meal served to both children and adults. It is easy to prepare, nourishing, and can be customized with ingredients such as honey, cinnamon, fresh fruit, or sugar. Whether enjoyed plain or with your favorite toppings, Bota is a wholesome way to start the day.

Cooking Method

  1.  In a bowl, mix the flour with 1 cup of cold water until smooth and free of lumps.
  2.  Bring the remaining 3 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
  3.  Gradually pour the flour mixture into the boiling water while stirring continuously.
  4.  Reduce the heat to low and cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent lumps from forming.
  5.  Add the salt and stir well.
  6.  If desired, mix in the sugar or honey, peanut butter, milk, or butter until fully incorporated.
  7.  Continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes until the porridge reaches a smooth, creamy consistency.
  8.  Serve hot with fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey if preferred.
