Indonesian Nasi Padang Recipe | Authentic Padang Rice Platter
Nasi Padang is one of Indonesia’s most famous culinary experiences, originating from the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra. Rather than being a single dish, Nasi Padang is a complete meal centered around steamed rice served with a variety of richly spiced meats, vegetables, curries, sambal, and side dishes. Renowned for its bold flavors, aromatic spices, and generous portions, Nasi Padang is a staple in Padang restaurants throughout Indonesia and is loved for its incredible variety.
A traditional Nasi Padang platter often includes steamed white rice accompanied by favorites such as Rendang, Ayam Pop, Gulai Ayam, Sambal Balado, fried chicken, beef curry, boiled eggs in chili sauce, cassava leaves cooked in coconut milk, fried tempeh, and crunchy crackers. Every component is deeply seasoned with Indonesian spices like turmeric, galangal, lemongrass, coriander, chilies, garlic, and coconut milk, creating layers of savory, spicy, creamy, and aromatic flavors.
This simplified homemade version features fragrant steamed rice served with rich beef rendang, spicy sambal, vegetables, fried tempeh, boiled eggs, and fresh cucumber slices. It provides the authentic taste of a traditional Padang meal while remaining practical for home cooking.
Whether enjoyed for lunch or dinner, Indonesian Nasi Padang is a vibrant feast that showcases the rich culinary heritage of West Sumatra and offers one of the most satisfying meals in Indonesian cuisine.
