Traditional Bangladeshi Ruti Recipe | Soft Homemade Flatbread

Ruti.jpg 195.76 KB
Ruti is one of the most popular traditional breads in Bangladesh and is commonly enjoyed as a daily meal with a variety of curries, vegetables, and meat dishes. This soft and simple flatbread is made with basic ingredients such as wheat flour, water, and a little salt. Despite its simplicity, Bangladeshi ruti has a wonderful texture and flavor that makes it a staple food in many households.

Making ruti at home is easy and requires only a few steps. The dough is prepared by mixing whole wheat flour with water and kneading it until it becomes soft and smooth. After resting for a short time, the dough is divided into small balls and rolled into thin circles before being cooked on a hot pan or tawa. As the ruti cooks, it develops light brown spots and becomes soft, warm, and slightly puffed.

Ruti is often served during breakfast, lunch, or dinner and pairs perfectly with many traditional Bangladeshi dishes. It can be enjoyed with vegetable curry, lentils (dal), chicken curry, beef curry, or fried eggs. Because it is light and versatile, ruti is considered a healthier alternative to many fried breads.

Homemade Bangladeshi ruti is not only delicious but also quick to prepare, making it perfect for everyday meals. With simple ingredients and easy cooking steps, anyone can prepare soft and fresh ruti at home and enjoy the authentic taste of traditional Bangladeshi cuisine.

Cooking Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
  2. Gradually add warm water while mixing to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest for about 15–20 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls.
  6. Lightly dust each ball with flour and roll it into a thin round shape using a rolling pin.
  7. Heat a flat pan or tawa over medium heat.
  8. Place the rolled ruti onto the hot pan and cook for about 30–40 seconds.
  9. Flip the ruti and cook the other side until light brown spots appear and the bread slightly puffs.
  10. Remove from the pan and brush lightly with oil or ghee if desired.
  11. Serve the warm ruti with your favorite curry or side dish.
