Zimbabwean Mapopo Candy Recipe | Traditional Sweet Papaya Candy

Mapopo Candy is a delightful traditional sweet from Zimbabwe made by slowly cooking ripe papaya (locally known as mapopo) with sugar until it becomes tender, glossy, and naturally sweet. This homemade fruit candy celebrates the tropical flavors of fresh papaya and is enjoyed as a snack, dessert, or festive treat.

Zimbabwean Mapopo Candy is easy to prepare using just a few simple ingredients. The slow-cooking process allows the papaya to absorb the sweet syrup while maintaining a soft, chewy texture. It can be enjoyed on its own or served alongside tea, making it a favorite homemade confection in many households.

Cooking Method

  1.  Peel the papaya, remove the seeds, and cut the flesh into evenly sized cubes.
  2.  In a large saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3.  Add the papaya cubes and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  4.  Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 40–50 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5.  Add the lemon juice, vanilla extract, and cinnamon if using.
  6.  Continue cooking until the syrup thickens and the papaya becomes glossy and translucent.
  7.  Remove the papaya pieces with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack or parchment-lined tray.
  8.  Allow them to cool completely and dry for several hours or overnight until slightly chewy.
  9.  Store the candy in an airtight container at room temperature.
