Yakimochi (How To Grill Kiri Mochi)
Yakimochi is a traditional Japanese snack made by grilling kiri mochi (rectangular blocks of mochi) until golden and slightly crispy on the outside while remaining soft and chewy inside. Yakimochi can be enjoyed plain, with soy sauce, or wrapped in nori (seaweed), making it a simple yet satisfying treat, especially during chilly weather.
Cooking Method
- Prepare the mochi – Cut kiri mochi into bite-sized pieces if not pre-cut.
- Preheat the grill or pan – Use a non-stick pan, grill, or open flame over medium heat. Lightly oil the surface if necessary.
- Grill the mochi – Place mochi on the grill or pan. Cook each side for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed.
- Optional seasoning – Brush with soy sauce or sprinkle sugar for a sweet-savory flavor. For traditional Yakimochi, wrap grilled mochi with a strip of nori.
- Serve hot – Serve immediately while warm and chewy.
