Authentic Filipino Bistek Tagalog Recipe | Classic Filipino Beef Steak

Filipino Bistek Tagalog is a classic Filipino beef dish made with thinly sliced beef marinated in soy sauce and fresh calamansi juice, then simmered with caramelized onions until tender and flavorful. Inspired by Spanish influences yet uniquely Filipino, this beloved comfort food is known for its perfect balance of savory, tangy, and slightly sweet flavors. Traditionally served with steamed white rice, Bistek Tagalog is a staple in Filipino households and a popular choice for family lunches, dinners, and special gatherings.

Cooking Method

  1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, calamansi juice, garlic, and black pepper.
  2. Add the beef slices and marinate for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Fry the onion rings until lightly caramelized. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, sear the marinated beef for 2–3 minutes on each side.
  6. Pour in the remaining marinade and the water or beef broth.
  7. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20–25 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
  8. Add the brown sugar if desired and adjust the seasoning with salt.
  9. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet and simmer for another 2 minutes.
  10. Garnish with extra onion rings and serve hot with steamed white rice.
