Classic Italian Meatballs in Marinara Sauce, known in Italy as Polpette al Sugo, are tender, juicy meatballs made with a blend of ground beef and pork, Parmesan cheese, fresh herbs, and breadcrumbs, then gently simmered in a rich homemade marinara sauce. This timeless Italian comfort food is bursting with authentic Mediterranean flavors and is perfect for serving over spaghetti, creamy polenta, or with crusty Italian bread. Whether for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering, these homemade meatballs deliver a delicious balance of savory meat, fragrant herbs, and slow-simmered tomato sauce.

Cooking Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, eggs, garlic, parsley, basil, milk, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined, then shape into 18–20 meatballs.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides for 8–10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, heat the olive oil for the sauce and sauté the onion until softened.
  5. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  6. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar.
  7. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
  8. Return the browned meatballs to the sauce, cover, and simmer over low heat for 30–35 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and tender.
  9. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  10. Garnish with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese. Serve over spaghetti, pasta, polenta, or with crusty Italian bread.
