Tornado Potato | Crispy Spiral Potato on a Stick

Tornado Potato is a fun and eye-catching potato snack made by cutting a whole potato into a continuous spiral, stretching it along a skewer, and frying or baking it until golden and crispy. Popular as a street-food-style snack, it combines a crunchy exterior with a tender, fluffy potato center.

Seasoned with paprika, garlic, black pepper, and salt, Tornado Potatoes are delicious on their own or served with ketchup, cheese sauce, spicy mayo, ranch, or garlic aioli. They make a fantastic party snack, carnival-style treat, or fun side dish for kids and adults.

Cooking Method

  1.  Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly. Peel them if desired.
  2.  Pat the potatoes completely dry.
  3.  Insert a wooden skewer lengthwise through the center of each potato.
  4.  Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the potato at an angle while rotating it around the skewer.
  5.  Continue cutting to create one continuous spiral from one end of the potato to the other.
  6.  Gently stretch the spiral along the skewer to create even gaps between the slices.
  7.  Repeat with the remaining potatoes.
  8.  In a bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and chili powder.
  9.  Gradually add the cold water and whisk until a smooth, fairly thin batter forms.
  10.  Carefully coat each spiral potato with the batter, making sure it reaches between the slices.
  11.  Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C)
  12.  Carefully place the coated potatoes into the hot oil.
  13.  Fry for approximately 5–7 minutes, turning as needed, until golden brown and crisp.
  14.  Remove and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.
  15.  Sprinkle with additional salt or your favorite seasoning while hot.
  16.  Serve immediately with ketchup, spicy mayo, cheese sauce, or ranch dressing.
