Chicken Curry | Classic Homemade Chicken Curry Recipe
Chicken Curry is a comforting and flavorful dish made with tender chicken simmered in a rich, aromatic sauce of onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and warm spices. This versatile curry is perfect for family lunches and dinners and pairs beautifully with steamed rice, naan, roti, or paratha.
The chicken is first browned with aromatic spices before being slowly cooked in the flavorful curry base. The result is tender chicken coated in a deliciously spiced sauce with a satisfying balance of savory, earthy, and mildly spicy flavors.
Cooking Method
- Heat the oil in a large heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat.
- Add the cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and bay leaf. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté for 6–8 minutes, until golden brown.
- Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and the oil begins to separate.
- Add the coriander, cumin, turmeric, paprika, black pepper, and salt.
- Stir well and cook the spices for 1 minute.
- Add the yogurt gradually, stirring continuously to prevent curdling.
- Add the chicken and toss thoroughly to coat it with the curry mixture.
- Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour in the chicken broth or water.
- Add the green chilies if using.
- Bring the curry to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 25–35 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
- Remove the lid and simmer for another 5–10 minutes if you prefer a thicker sauce.
- Stir in the garam masala.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro.
- Serve hot with steamed rice, naan, roti, or paratha.
