Fish Curry | Rich & Flavorful Homemade Fish Curry Recipe
Fish Curry is a comforting and aromatic dish made with tender fish fillets simmered in a flavorful tomato, onion, garlic, ginger, and spice-based gravy. The fish gently absorbs the fragrant curry sauce, creating a delicious balance of savory, tangy, earthy, and mildly spicy flavors.
This versatile curry can be prepared with firm white fish such as cod, tilapia, haddock, snapper, or other locally available varieties. A touch of turmeric helps season the fish while cumin, coriander, chili, and garam masala give the curry its warm depth.
Serve Fish Curry with steamed basmati rice, plain rice, naan, roti, or paratha for a satisfying lunch or dinner.
Cooking Method
- Pat the fish pieces dry with paper towels.
- Season them with turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Lightly pan-fry the fish for 2–3 minutes per side until lightly golden. Do not fully cook it at this stage.
- Remove the fish and set aside.
- Add the remaining oil to the same pan.
- Add mustard seeds if using and allow them to sizzle briefly.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5–7 minutes, until softened and lightly golden.
- Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and the oil begins to separate.
- Add the coriander, cumin, turmeric, chili powder, black pepper, and salt.
- Stir and cook the spices for about 1 minute.
- Pour in the water or fish stock.
- Add the green chilies if using.
- Bring the curry sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 8–10 minutes.
- If using coconut milk, stir it into the sauce now.
- Carefully place the fish pieces into the curry.
- Cover and simmer gently for 6–10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish, until cooked through.
- Avoid stirring aggressively so the fish doesn't break apart.
- Add lemon juice and garam masala.
- Taste and adjust the salt and spices.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro.
- Serve hot with rice, naan, roti, or paratha.
