Shrimp Chow Mein | Classic Chinese-Style Shrimp Noodle Stir-Fry
Shrimp Chow Mein is a flavorful and satisfying noodle dish made with juicy shrimp, chewy chow mein noodles, crisp vegetables, garlic, ginger, and a savory Chinese-style stir-fry sauce. Everything is cooked quickly over high heat, giving the noodles a delicious lightly toasted aroma while keeping the shrimp tender and the vegetables crisp.
The sauce combines soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and a touch of rice vinegar for a balanced savory flavor. This easy homemade takeout-style meal is perfect for busy weeknight dinners, quick lunches, or family meals.
Cooking Method
- Cook the chow mein noodles according to the package directions until just tender.
- Drain and rinse the noodles briefly under cold water.
- Toss the noodles with a little vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
- Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large wok over high heat.
- Add the shrimp and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes per side, until pink and just cooked through.
- Remove the shrimp from the wok and set aside.
- Add the remaining oil.
- Add the sliced onion, carrot, and bell pepper.
- Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes, keeping the vegetables slightly crisp.
- Add the cabbage, garlic, and ginger.
- Cook for another 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
- Return the shrimp to the wok.
- Add the cooked noodles.
- Pour in the light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, sugar, and white pepper.
- Toss everything together over high heat for 2–3 minutes.
- Add the bean sprouts and green onions.
- Stir-fry for another 1 minute.
- Add chili sauce if desired.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning.
- Serve immediately while hot.
