Thai Tom Yum Goong Recipe | Authentic Spicy & Sour Shrimp Soup

Tom Yum Goong is a famous Thai hot and sour shrimp soup known for its bold combination of spicy, sour, salty, and aromatic flavors. This classic Thai dish features juicy shrimp simmered in a fragrant broth infused with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chilies, mushrooms, and fresh lime juice. Fish sauce adds savory depth while tomatoes and fresh herbs bring additional brightness to the soup. Traditionally served steaming hot with jasmine rice, Tom Yum Goong is a beloved Thai comfort food and a popular choice for lunch, dinner, or a flavorful starter.

Cooking Method

  1. Pour the water or shrimp stock into a large pot and bring it to a gentle boil.
  2. Add the lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chilies, and garlic. Simmer for 5–7 minutes to infuse the broth with their aromatic flavors.
  3. Add the mushrooms and tomatoes. Simmer for another 3–4 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften.
  4. Stir in the fish sauce, optional Nam Prik Pao, sugar, and salt.
  5. Add the shrimp and simmer gently for 3–5 minutes, or until they are opaque and fully cooked. Avoid overcooking.
  6. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the fresh lime juice. Adding the lime juice after cooking helps preserve its bright, sour flavor.
  7. Taste and adjust the balance of lime juice, fish sauce, chilies, and sugar according to preference.
  8. Ladle the hot soup into serving bowls.
  9. Garnish with fresh cilantro, Thai basil, and sliced red chili.
  10. Serve immediately with lime wedges and steamed jasmine rice if desired.
