Greek Tzatziki Recipe | Authentic Creamy Cucumber Yogurt Sauce
Greek Tzatziki is a refreshing and creamy sauce made with thick Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs. A staple of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, Tzatziki is traditionally served alongside grilled meats, Souvlaki, Gyros, roasted vegetables, and warm pita bread. Its cool cucumber, tangy yogurt, and aromatic garlic create the perfect contrast to rich and savory dishes. Quick to prepare and requiring no cooking, this versatile sauce is ideal as a dip, spread, or side for everyday meals and Mediterranean-inspired gatherings.
Cooking Method
- Grate the cucumber using the large holes of a box grater.
- Place the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen towel or fine-mesh strainer and squeeze thoroughly to remove as much excess liquid as possible.
- Add the Greek yogurt to a medium bowl.
- Stir in the drained cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, dill, optional mint, salt, and black pepper.
- Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are evenly combined.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
- Before serving, stir gently and taste. Adjust the salt, lemon juice, or garlic if needed.
- Transfer to a serving bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil.
- Garnish with fresh dill or mint and serve chilled with pita bread, grilled meats, vegetables, or Souvlaki.
