Beef Biryani is a hearty and aromatic South Asian rice dish made with tender beef, fragrant basmati rice, caramelized onions, yogurt, fresh herbs, and a warm blend of whole and ground spices. Slow cooking allows the beef to become tender while the flavorful masala infuses every grain of rice.
The beef is marinated with yogurt, ginger, garlic, and spices before being cooked with onions and tomatoes. Partially cooked basmati rice is then layered over the rich beef masala and gently steamed until the rice is fluffy and the flavors are beautifully combined.
Perfect for family dinners, celebrations, weekend meals, and special occasions, Beef Biryani is delicious served with cooling raita, fresh salad, boiled eggs, or a spicy chutney.
Cooking Method
- Rinse the basmati rice until the water runs mostly clear.
- Soak the rice for 20–30 minutes, then drain.
- Combine the beef with yogurt, ginger, garlic, turmeric, chili powder, cumin, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt.
- Marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat oil and ghee in a heavy-bottomed pot.
- Add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and bay leaf.
- Add the sliced onions and cook until deeply golden.
- Add the marinated beef and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add tomatoes and green chilies.
- Cover and cook over medium-low heat until the beef becomes tender and the masala thickens. Add a little water if needed.
- Meanwhile, boil the soaked rice in salted water until about 70% cooked.
- Drain the rice thoroughly.
- Spread the partially cooked rice over the beef masala.
- Sprinkle with fresh mint, coriander, and saffron milk if desired.
- Cover tightly and cook over very low heat for 20–25 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let the biryani rest for 10 minutes.
- Gently fluff the rice and combine the layers.
- Serve hot with raita, salad, or chutney.
