Prawn Biryani Recipe | Fragrant Indian Shrimp Biryani with Basmati Rice

0 likes 0 reviews 1 view

Prawn Biryani is a fragrant and flavorful Indian rice dish made with juicy prawns, aromatic basmati rice, caramelized onions, yogurt, fresh herbs, and traditional biryani spices. The prawns are gently cooked with ginger, garlic, green chilies, and warm spices before being layered with partially cooked basmati rice. A final steaming step allows the prawns and rice to absorb the rich spices while keeping the rice fluffy and beautifully aromatic.

This seafood biryani is a wonderful choice for family dinners, weekend meals, festive gatherings, and special occasions. The combination of tender prawns, fragrant rice, saffron, mint, and fried onions creates a delicious balance of savory, spicy, and aromatic flavors. Serve Prawn Biryani hot with cooling raita, cucumber salad, lemon wedges, or mint chutney for a satisfying complete meal.

Cooking Method

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and soak it for 20–30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil or ghee in a heavy pot and fry the sliced onions until golden. Remove half for garnishing.
  3. Add the whole spices, ginger-garlic paste, and green chilies. Sauté until fragrant.
  4. Add the prawns, yogurt, turmeric, chili powder, biryani masala, and salt. Cook for 4–5 minutes until the prawns are almost cooked.
  5. Remove the prawns temporarily to prevent overcooking.
  6. Boil the soaked rice in salted water until about 70–80% cooked, then drain.
  7. Layer the rice over the prawn masala and return the prawns on top.
  8. Add saffron, mint, cilantro, and fried onions.
  9. Cover tightly and cook over low heat for 10–15 minutes.
  10. Turn off the heat and let the biryani rest for 5–10 minutes.
  11. Gently fluff the rice and serve hot with raita, salad, or lemon wedges.
