Turkish Lahmacun Recipe | Crispy Turkish Flatbread with Spiced Meat
Turkish Lahmacun is a thin, crispy flatbread topped with a flavorful mixture of finely minced meat, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and aromatic spices. Often called Turkish pizza, Lahmacun is traditionally baked at high heat until the edges become crisp while the meat topping remains juicy and richly seasoned. It is commonly served hot with fresh parsley, lemon wedges, onions, and a squeeze of lemon. Rolled up with fresh salad and herbs, Lahmacun makes a delicious lunch, dinner, or satisfying street-food-style meal.
Cooking Method
- Combine the flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowl. Add warm water and olive oil, then mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until slightly puffed.
- Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) with a large baking tray or pizza stone inside.
- Combine the ground meat, tomato, bell pepper, onion, garlic, tomato paste, olive oil, spices, salt, and parsley. Mix until evenly combined.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll each one into a very thin circle.
- Spread a thin, even layer of the meat mixture over each dough circle, reaching close to the edges.
- Carefully transfer the Lahmacun to the hot baking tray or pizza stone.
- Bake for 6–8 minutes, until the edges are crisp and the meat is fully cooked.
- Repeat with the remaining dough and topping.
- Serve hot with lemon wedges, parsley, sliced onion, and fresh salad.
- Roll the Lahmacun around the salad and herbs and enjoy immediately.
