Moong Dal Chilla is a popular Indian savory pancake made from soaked and blended yellow moong dal. Naturally protein-rich and packed with simple spices and fresh vegetables, these golden lentil pancakes are crispy around the edges, soft in the center, and full of delicious Indian flavors.

The batter is prepared by blending soaked moong dal with ginger, green chili, cumin, and a little water until smooth. Chopped onion, tomato, coriander, and other vegetables can be added for extra flavor and texture. The batter is spread thinly on a hot skillet and cooked with a small amount of oil until golden and crisp.

Moong Dal Chilla is an excellent choice for breakfast, brunch, a light lunch, or an evening snack. Serve it hot with mint chutney, coriander chutney, tomato chutney, or yogurt for a wholesome and satisfying Indian meal.

  1.  Rinse the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 3–4 hours
  2.  Drain the soaked dal completely.
  3.  Add the dal, ginger, green chili, cumin, turmeric, red chili powder, salt, and a little water to a blender.
  4.  Blend into a smooth, pourable batter.
  5.  Transfer the batter to a bowl.
  6.  Stir in the chopped onion, tomato, and fresh coriander.
  7.  Add a little water if the batter is too thick.
  8.  Heat a nonstick skillet or tawa over medium heat.
  9.  Lightly grease the surface with oil.
  10.  Pour a ladleful of batter onto the skillet.
  11.  Spread it gently into a thin round pancake.
  12.  Drizzle a little oil around the edges and on top.
  13.  Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the bottom becomes golden and crisp.
  14.  Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 1–2 minutes
  15.  Repeat with the remaining batter.
  16.  Serve hot with mint chutney, yogurt, or tomato chutney.
