Paneer Butter Masala is a rich and comforting North Indian curry made with soft paneer cubes simmered in a creamy tomato-based sauce. Butter, cream, aromatic spices, and a touch of sweetness create its signature smooth, mildly spiced, and luxurious flavor.
The gravy begins with butter, onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and fragrant Indian spices. The mixture is blended until silky smooth, then enriched with cream and finished with tender paneer. The result is a restaurant-style curry that is wonderfully creamy without being overwhelmingly spicy.
Serve Paneer Butter Masala hot with naan, roti, paratha, or fragrant basmati rice. It is an excellent choice for family dinners, festive meals, or a special Indian-inspired dinner at home.
Cooking Method
- Heat the oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add the ginger and garlic and sauté for about 1 minute.
- Add the tomatoes, cumin, turmeric, chili powder, and coriander powder.
- Cook for 7–8 minutes, until the tomatoes become soft and the mixture thickens.
- Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Transfer it to a blender and blend until completely smooth.
- Strain the gravy if you prefer an extra-silky restaurant-style texture.
- Return the gravy to the skillet and add the remaining butter and water.
- Simmer gently for 5 minutes.
- Add the paneer cubes and cook for another 3–4 minutes.
- Stir in the cream, sugar, garam masala, and salt.
- Simmer for 1–2 minutes without boiling heavily.
- Garnish with fresh coriander and a small swirl of cream.
- Serve hot with naan, roti, or basmati rice.
