Kanda Ti Nyma is a traditional Cameroonian dish made with seasoned ground beef shaped into tender meatballs and simmered in a rich, savory sauce. Popular in Cameroonian cuisine, this hearty meal combines meat with aromatic spices, tomatoes, onions, and ground peanuts to create a deeply flavorful sauce with a distinctive nutty character.
The meatballs are gently cooked until tender, allowing them to absorb the rich seasoning and sauce. Kanda Ti Nyma is commonly enjoyed with staple sides such as boiled plantains, cassava, cocoyam, or steamed rice, making it a satisfying choice for family lunches and dinners.
Cooking Method
- Place the ground beef in a large bowl and season with salt and black pepper.
- Mix thoroughly and shape the beef into small, firm meatballs.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Brown the meatballs in batches, turning gently until lightly browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pot, sauté the chopped onion until softened and lightly golden.
- Add the garlic, ginger, and Scotch bonnet pepper and cook for 1 minute.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 8–10 minutes until softened and reduced.
- Stir in the ground peanuts and gradually add the beef stock or water, mixing to create a smooth sauce.
- Return the meatballs to the pot and gently coat them with the sauce.
- Cover and simmer over low heat for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce has thickened.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Serve hot with boiled plantains, cassava, cocoyam, or steamed rice.
