Japanese Sushi Rolls, also known as maki sushi, are a classic Japanese dish made by rolling seasoned sushi rice and flavorful fillings inside sheets of dried seaweed called nori. These bite-sized rolls are loved for their combination of tender rice, crisp vegetables, and savory fillings. Popular choices include cucumber, avocado, cooked shrimp, and cooked or smoked fish.
Making sushi rolls at home is easier with a bamboo rolling mat and a few simple ingredients. The rice is seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, then spread over nori and layered with your preferred fillings. Once tightly rolled, the sushi is sliced into neat pieces and served with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi. This customizable Japanese favorite works beautifully for lunch, dinner, or a special homemade meal.
Cooking Method
- Rinse the sushi rice several times until the water runs mostly clear.
- Cook the rice according to the package instructions or in a rice cooker. Let it rest briefly after cooking.
- In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved.
- Transfer the warm rice to a wide bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool until just warm.
- Place a nori sheet, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat.
- With slightly damp hands, spread a thin, even layer of rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch uncovered along the far edge.
- Arrange cucumber, avocado, and your chosen cooked filling in a line across the rice near the edge closest to you.
- Lift the bamboo mat and roll the sushi firmly away from you, keeping the filling in place. Moisten the uncovered nori edge slightly to seal.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
- Use a sharp, damp knife to cut each roll into 6–8 pieces, wiping the blade between cuts.
- Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi if desired.
