Homemade Apple Butter is a rich, smooth fruit spread made by slowly cooking apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and warm spices until they develop a deep caramel color and concentrated sweetness. Despite its name, apple butter contains no dairy butter. Its thick, velvety texture and naturally fruity flavor make it a delicious alternative to jam or jelly.
This comforting fall favorite is perfect for spreading on toast, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, and muffins. Slow cooking allows the apples to soften and their flavors to deepen, creating a fragrant spread with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Easy to prepare with simple ingredients, homemade Apple Butter is a wonderful way to use fresh apples and enjoy their flavor throughout the year.
Cooking Method
- Place the chopped apples, brown sugar, apple cider or water, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt in a large heavy-bottomed pot.
- Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and cook for 1½–2 hours, stirring regularly so the apples do not stick.
- Once the apples are very soft, blend the mixture with an immersion blender until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer it to a blender in batches.
- Return the purée to the pot if needed and continue cooking uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring frequently, until thick and spreadable.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and taste. Adjust the cinnamon or sweetness if desired.
- Allow the apple butter to cool, then transfer it to clean containers.
- Serve on toast, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, or freshly baked bread.
