Vietnamese Pho Soup is a beloved Vietnamese noodle soup known for its fragrant broth, tender rice noodles, fresh herbs, and flavorful toppings. Traditionally prepared with beef or chicken, pho gets its distinctive aroma from spices such as star anise, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, which slowly infuse the broth with rich, warming flavors.
This comforting soup combines silky rice noodles with a savory broth, thinly sliced meat, and fresh garnishes such as cilantro, spring onions, lime, and bean sprouts. It is perfect for lunch or dinner and can be customized with chili, basil, or hoisin sauce to suit your taste.
Cooking Method
- Char the onion and ginger in a dry pan or under a grill until lightly browned.
- Place the broth in a large pot and add the onion, ginger, cinnamon stick, and star anise.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes to develop the flavor.
- Stir in the fish sauce and adjust the seasoning to taste.
- Cook the rice noodles according to the package instructions, then drain.
- Divide the noodles among serving bowls.
- Arrange the thinly sliced beef or cooked chicken over the noodles.
- Strain the hot broth and carefully pour it into the bowls. If using very thin raw beef, ensure the broth is boiling hot so the meat cooks safely; otherwise, cook the beef separately until done.
- Garnish with spring onions, cilantro, basil, and bean sprouts.
- Serve immediately with lime wedges and chili, if desired.
