Cachorro Quente is Brazil's popular version of the classic hot dog, known for its generous toppings and delicious combination of flavours. Unlike a simple hot dog served with mustard and ketchup, the Brazilian version often features sausages simmered in a rich tomato sauce with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and seasonings. The sausage filling is placed inside soft hot dog buns and topped with a variety of ingredients that make every bite flavourful and satisfying.
This beloved Brazilian street food is commonly enjoyed at food stalls, parties, family gatherings, and casual meals. Depending on the region, popular toppings include mashed potatoes, sweet corn, peas, grated cheese, potato sticks, and sauces. Easy to customise and simple to prepare, Cachorro Quente is a delicious choice for lunch, evening snacks, or a fun homemade fast-food meal.
Cooking Method
- Prepare the Sausages: Heat a little water in a saucepan and simmer the sausages for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Cook the Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened. Stir in minced garlic.
- Prepare the Sauce: Add chopped tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, paprika, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Add the Sausages: Place the sausages in the tomato sauce. Add a little water if needed and simmer for another 5 minutes so the flavours combine.
- Prepare the Buns: Lightly warm the hot dog buns in a pan or oven until soft and slightly toasted.
- Assemble the Hot Dogs: Place one sausage inside each bun and spoon generous amounts of tomato sauce over it.
- Add Toppings: Add mashed potatoes, sweet corn, green peas, and grated cheese according to preference.
- Finish and Serve: Sprinkle crispy potato sticks over the top and add ketchup or mustard if desired. Serve immediately while warm.
